Johnny Hardwick, the beloved voice actor behind the character Dale Gribble on the hit animated series King of the Hill, completed work on a couple of episodes of the show’s upcoming revival on Hulu prior to his death earlier this month.
Hardwick, who passed away on July 3rd at the age of 59, voiced the chain-smoking, conspiracy-obsessed bug exterminator in all 258 episodes of the Fox series.
TVLine has learned that Hardwick had already recorded his lines for a couple of episodes of the revival prior to his death. It is unclear if another actor will be brought in to replace Hardwick or if the show will use existing recordings of his voice.
The King of the Hill revival was announced in October 2019 and is set to feature the original cast, including Mike Judge, Kathy Najimy, Pamela Adlon, and Stephen Root. The show is expected to debut on Hulu sometime in 2021.
Hardwick’s death was announced by his family on July 3rd. He is survived by his wife, two children, and two grandchildren.
