We are currently seeking puppeteers/performers for “The Panda”, a film in development about a young girl born in Canada, who while visiting her family’s ancestral home to care for her ailing grandmother befriends a playful and mysterious panda bear and goes on a magical adventure.
This project is being produced by an ad-hoc collective and is aimed at a general audience. Ultimately, the film will be produced using a combination of live action puppetry and motion capture techniques. The initial phase of the project involves developing and staging of 1 – 2 short scenes from the proposed film as a live, Bunraku-style table-top puppetry performance that will be showcased in June 2017.
Participation in the first phase of this project is on a profit share basis, with a small stipend to be paid to all participants to cover transportation and other costs directly incurred. The commitment for this phase of project in will be participation in approximately 6-8 weekly rehearsal and training sessions between late April and June of 2017 as well as the workshop performance in June.
Prior puppetry experience is helpful, but not essential (performers will be trained in the specific puppetry techniques to be used in the project). Training in movement, mask, Commedia dell’arte and/or dance is an asset. Fluency in Cantonese and/or Mandarin is an asset for puppeteers, but not required.
The Panda Project is committed to diversity in its casting and we welcome applications from all passionate performers. Due to the subject matter of the project, artists who are First or Second Generation Canadians are especially encouraged to apply.
