LOGLINE: An apprehensive adolescent is faced with the challenges of a second-generation immigrant and is forced to break the language barrier in this dramatic comedy.

CHARACTERS:
Protagonist (15–22 / open gender)
The protagonist is a 2nd generation immigrant in a traditional Chinese household. Like many 2nd generation immigrants, he has embraced more western ideals and is left feeling disconnected from his native background. One major problem for him is that he can understand the language, but can’t vocalize it themselves well. For him, he’s looking to find out who he is and find a balance between his Canadian and Chinese background.

Sibling (18–25 / open gender)
The sibling is the older, ideal child in the traditional Chinese household. They act as the counterpart to the protagonist as he is more connected to his native background and will use this fact to agitate their younger sibling due to his competitive nature. Despite their proud attitude, they grow to be impressed with their younger sibling later on.

Mom (35+ / female)
Mom is the blunt, upfront, and demanding parent of the Protagonist and Sibling. She can come off as seemingly insensitive and will often cause stress for her children. Although she has an aggressive demeanour, she cares deeply for her family at heart, and she acts as the catalyst for the Protagonist’s growth.

Store Owner (40+ / open gender)
The Store Owner is the founder of a traditional Chinese medicine store that the Protagonist will visit. He serves to highlight the Protagonist’s flaws as the Protagonist will have to visit his store to buy items using Cantonese. Due to the Protagonist’s struggle with the language, however, the Store Owner will try to figure out what the Protagonist wants through some comedic methods.

Dad (35+ / male)
Dad is the carefree and open parent of the Protagonist and Sibling. Often at work, he doesn’t have much time to see his family, but when he does, he tries his best to make the most of it. NOTE: This character will only be present at the ending of the 5-minute film.
