Theatre Artaud is seeking an East/ South East Asian performer for the role of GRANDMOTHER in the production of 49TH DAY at the 2020 Next Stage Theatre Festival in Toronto, Ontario.
Written by Dora-nominated performer athena kaitlin trinh and directed by theatre provocateur Rouvan Silogix, 49TH DAY is a poetic investigation of intergenerational trauma and migration/displacement through the lens of a young woman who travels to Viet Nam to perform rituals for her estranged grandmother.
About the role:
GRANDMOTHER (must read 39 or older) – Your harsh, brash East/ South East Asian grandmother who loves as hard as she scolds. Looking for someone who can command the stage and is a good mover. Preference given to performers who can speak CANTONESE, MANDARIN, or VIETNAMESE.
***Due to the cultural specificity of the story, preference will be given to submissions from actors of East/ South East Asian descent. Queer/ trans/ non-binary/ gender fluid performers, performers with disabilities or who are differently-abled, mad performers, performers of all sizes and capabilities are encouraged to apply.***
Performers will be given a selection from the script to prepare and should be ready for redirection and movement exploration.
The performer will need to be available throughout November and December 2019 for rehearsals, and from January 2nd to 18th, 2020 for tech week and show dates. The performer will be compensated with a $600 honorarium (with the possibility of a top-up). CAEA performers will be engaged under a CAEA Festival Policy contract.
