EXCLUSIVE: Cameron Monaghan, best known for his role as Ian Gallagher in the hit Showtime series Shameless, has closed a deal to join Jared Leto and more in Tron: Ares, the third film in the Tron sci-fi franchise from Disney.
The film will follow Leto’s computer program Ares on a journey from the digital world to that of the real world. Monaghan’s character is being kept under wraps, but sources say he will play a key role in the story.
Tron: Ares is being directed by Garth Davis, who is best known for his work on the Oscar-nominated Lion and Mary Magdalene. The script is being written by Jesse Wigutow, who wrote the upcoming Tron: Legacy sequel.
The Tron franchise began in 1982 with the original Tron, which starred Jeff Bridges as a computer programmer who is transported into a digital world. The film was followed by Tron: Legacy in 2010, which starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde.
