“A Bloody Mess” is a film about a teenage girl Varsha who comes from a conservative family where talking about menstruation is considered disrespectful. She is set with limitations and restrictions that she wants to be free of. She wants to be able to say “I’m on my period Dad” instead of always being referred to as “being sick” or “not feeling well” by her mother. Will Varsha be able to voice her opinions in the conservative family she comes from? Will she be able to break free of all the limitations that she is set with?
[VARSHA] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 15-20] [ETHNICITY: SOUTH ASIAN]
Varsha is a curious teenage girl who has always been told what to do and what not to do. She wants to have her own voice but living in a conservative household, it becomes more challenging day by day as her thoughts and opinions are controlled by her mother. She wants to set herself free and wants her voice to be heard. She wants to feel comfortable with talking about menstruation with her father and/or her brother at her home.
[VARSHA’S MOTHER] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 40-45] [ETHNICITY: SOUTH ASIAN]
Varsha’s mother comes from a conservative family who has always thought of periods being something that need to be hidden from the males in the family. She believes that they are impure and thus always lays down rules and restrictions for Varsha on what she can and cannot do while she is on her period.
[VARSHA’S FATHER] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 40-45] [ETHNICITY: SOUTH ASIAN]
Varsha’s father is an observant man, who remains calm. He processes a lot more than he says out loud. He is quite understanding of the situation but does not communicate as much. He is aware of his surroundings and always tries to keep everything in control.
[YOUNG VARSHA] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 9 – 13] [ETHNICITY: SOUTH ASIAN]
Young Varsha appears in a flashback. She is scared, confused and curious all at once. She loves her family and is willing to runaway for their sake.
[VARSHA’S BROTHER] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 11-16] [ETHNICITY: SOUTH ASIAN]
Varsha’s brother is carefree and somewhat oblivious to his surroundings and circumstances. He keeps himself occupied with extra-curricular activities. He is athletic and loves to play soccer.
